Hola Amigos!
What a wonderful day we had exploring Antigua!
It's so strange to be able to use a computer with internet while traveling. I have this feeling like I'm "cheating" or not being authentic; as I feel too connected to my familiar things. I also have the feeling that I shouldn't be on the computer, and out exploring, but I also believe that its okay to have 20 minutes of "down time".
Today started out with a lovely walk through the cobblestone streets of Antiqua. We didn't have a destination, and simply strolled through the streets taking in the sites and sounds.
We had desayuno perfecto in the back of a souvenir shop, black beans, tortillas, juevos and cafe. Muy deliciosa! See the photo of Andrew lookin stoked about breakfast.
We hit up a few shops and bought some regalos. We also attended Catholic mass (well for about 10 minutes or one song). We also stumbled upon this incredibly well done photo exhibit from many Latin countries. The photos were incredible, and it was in this beautiful open courtyard museum place. AND best part, gratis! I took some info on it, but there are some HUGE words in Spanish and I might need a little help translating.
The most poignant photo was of these two kids playing in a room with a small crucifix on the wall. One kid one had a toy gun, the other wearing a t-shirt that said "My 1st Christmas"; he was the one being shot, complete with a small "blood spot" in between his eyes. There were some other incredible photos and if I can link the exhibit up, I will. You all would like.
Andrew and I walked through an open air market, and watched un partido del futbol. See the photo, it says it all. Man o man, futbol is the world's sport.
We took a few minutes to have some beers and nachos in a gringo cafe with a waitress who was miserable. I like the cheap happy hour beer. 15 quetzales which equals a little less than 2 bucks.
We saw some strange sights today, a guy running 3 dobermans on a bicycle. Another funny cosita was a man who approached Andrew and offered him Spanish lessons and then after Andrew told him he lived in San Francisco, and that I was not his girlfriend, but we were just traveling together, the man told him he was gay. I argued that that might help him get some more business. People here are friendly.
We did some more walking, exploring and set up our hike to the volcan Pacaya for tomorrow! I hear there is fresh hot magma.
So, this is the relaxing part of the trip. In two days we will be in San Lorenzo doing field work where there are no touristas, and Mayan culture. I'm really looking forward to working. Hopefully the lab will work and we will get the samples we need to conduct the research.
Everyone has been so kind so far. Its wonderful to be traveling again, speaking Spanish and learning. I love this kind of learning through experience and I express my gratitude to my classmates and teachers and the bigger COEH organization to make this all happen.
Wow... by the way, there is good coffee here for the tourists. I dont know if it was because I haven't had coffee in 3 days or if the cafe is muy fuerte, but Im flyin'.
Hasta la pasta! We're off to go have some dinner and hopefully catch some more music. And enjoy this town surrounded by volcanos!

Black beans, tortillas, juevos y cafe!!?? = YUMMY! Divertelo, because that good coffee might dissappear once you get off the tourist track. :-)
